A sudden attack of difficulty breathing along with wheezing caused by a spasm of the bronchial tubes or by swelling of the mucous membrane. Inflammation of the lungs & airways are what you feel during an asthma attack. The inflammation causes breathing to become difficult & breathing. The airways narrow & excess mucous is released in the airways creating additional problems with breathing. This results in patients having to cough to expel the mucous.
